Riding the Wind in Ceará, Brazil – A Kitesurfer’s Paradise

When it comes to kitesurfing meccas, few places can rival Ceará, Brazil one of unquestionable kite capitals of the world. Whether you are a new kiter or an avid big air enthusiast this beautiful coastline has everything you could ever ask for. I wanted to take a moment to talk about my family’s Annual trip, this was our twelfth time visiting Ceara, and we waste no time when we’re there! 100+ km downwinders, butter flat lakes, and dozens of cities to stop and see on the way make sure we always have plenty to do.

Taiba – Our Favorite town

The town we love the most is Taiba, it’s small, about 30 minutes off the highway and has the best waves in all of Ceara, some magical days we’ve gotten double overhead waves and 30 knot gusts! With Paracuru a short 15km downwinder away, we used to go there every day, if Taiba had 20 knots, Paracuru had 25, on Surf R you can see the jumps getting bigger and bigger as we get closer.

Talk about Downwidners

Our favorite downwinder is Taiba to Emboaca, its about 65km in a straight line, we usually stretch it to 85km going upwind a little, but the entire way is nonstop hitting wave lips and send jumping as far as you can. Some of the shorter 50km downwind,I would have over 10km of jump distance total. Cumbuco to Taiba will always have an extra flare since you have to walk under the cargo port bridge and conveyer belts with your kite in hand.

The most extreme downwinder we did was 110km in exactly 4 hours, that was during our biggest continuous stretch where we did 400km in 4 days. We took it easy on the last day so we ended with 450km in 5 days. We started in Fortaleza and ended in Barra Grande, one state over, with nothing but waterproof backpacks, a change of clothes, and chargers for our phones. We’d sleep the night, eat breakfast, leave the town by 11 am, and repeat.

Friends and more

I was very happy to see the Brazilian Brothers for a few days in Prea during this trip, we used to have the 3 Brazilians up in Jupiter taking over with megaloops and big air showdowns. It was amazing to get back in the water with them and see who can get the biggest on the 8 meters. Always unfortunate to get back to the Florida summer, but our season is right around the corner and looking forward to get stronger wind here!
